Modern flavours in grandmothers’ traditions
The production of jams and preserves has a long tradition in Slovakia, passed down from generation to generation. As part of the "Made in Slovakia" project, we visited the RISO-R company, where we saw that traditional methods and recipes can be combined with modern technologies.
How jam used to be made in Slovakia
The production of jams and preserves in Slovakia has a long and rich tradition that persists to this day. In the past, these sweet delicacies were an integral part of our ancestors' daily lives. Jam was made from available fruits such as plums, pears, apples, and cherries. Over time, other types of fruit were added, expanding the range of flavors and variations.
Jam was often the only way to preserve fruit for the winter. Traditional methods involved long hours of slow cooking the fruit in copper or iron kettles. The process was time-consuming and required a lot of patience, but the result was thick, delicious jam that lasted for months.
Traditions and customs associated with jam making
The production of jams and preserves was often a family affair. In villages, entire families would gather during fruit harvests and for communal cooking. This activity was not just work but also a social event, where families shared recipes, experiences, and stories. In many parts of Slovakia, traditional recipes have been preserved and passed down from generation to generation.
One of the most famous traditions is the brewing of plum jam in the village of Hrušov in southern Slovakia. Every year, there is a festival where locals demonstrate traditional methods of jam making. This event attracts visitors from all over Slovakia and abroad who want to taste authentic products and experience the atmosphere of the old days.
Development and modernization of jam production
The production of jams and marmalades has evolved with the development of technology and modernization. Today, various instruments and equipment make the cooking process easier and faster. Modern techniques preserve more vitamins and the natural flavor of the fruit, making jams and marmalades even healthier treats.
Despite these advances, many producers strive to preserve traditional methods and recipes. One such producer is RISO-R, a company that prides itself on the quality and authenticity of its products. Their jams and marmalades are made according to traditional recipes, using only the highest quality ingredients.
Behind the secrets of RISO-R jam production
As part of the "Made in Slovakia" project, we visited the RISO-R factory and had the opportunity to see the entire production process, from fruit processing to packaging the finished products. It was fascinating to see how modern technology combines with traditional practices. RISO-R exemplifies how tradition and innovation can be successfully combined. Their tasty products are appreciated by an increasing number of customers. During our visit, the company's employees kindly explained the whole process and shared their experience and passion for jam making.
The aim of the "Made in Slovakia" project is to support and promote quality Slovak products, and RISO-R is one of the examples we can be proud of in Slovakia. We believe that such visits and cooperation will help raise awareness of quality domestic products and encourage people to support them.
