Dowina Guitars: The birth of world-class sound

Music is a universal language that connects emotion, culture, and craftsmanship. In this article, we take a closer look at Dowina Guitars – a Slovak manufacturer of acoustic guitars that creates instruments with a strong emphasis on materials, sound, and precise workmanship. We explore how music and guitars came into being, share fascinating facts from the world of guitars, and finally take you inside the Dowina workshop, where we personally observed how a high-quality musical instrument is made.

Music has accompanied humanity for thousands of years, with its origins reaching back to the first rhythmic beats and vibrating strings of simple instruments. The earliest string instruments appeared as early as ancient times – such as lyres and harps – and gradually evolved into more complex forms.

Over time, instruments emerged that used resonant bodies and strings stretched across a fingerboard, allowing for a wider range of tones and harmonies. From this development, guitars eventually took shape in the various forms we know today – acoustic, electric, and classical. Guitars found their place across many musical genres, from folk and blues to rock and jazz, becoming one of the most popular instruments in the world.

What you might not have known about guitars

Alongside the piano and violin, the guitar is one of the most widespread instruments across cultures. It is accessible, portable, and suitable for both solo playing and accompaniment, which has greatly contributed to its popularity.
- A guitar made in 1550 by luthier Belchior Dias is housed in a Paris museum and is still considered one of the oldest preserved guitars in existence.
- Research by BBC Music has shown that playing the guitar can help in the treatment of anxiety and PTSD. The guitar is also used in music therapy for children and seniors.
- On an acoustic guitar, the strings are tensioned with a force of up to 80 kilograms. The construction of the instrument must be perfectly balanced to withstand this tension over the long term.
- In the Indian city of Shillong, 6,293 guitarists gathered to play Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door by Bob Dylan together. The event was recorded in the Guinness World Records, and Shillong has since earned the nickname Rock Capital of India.
- In 1999, Eric Clapton auctioned more than 100 of his guitars, including the legendary Blackie. The proceeds were used to fund the Crossroads Centre, a rehabilitation facility for people struggling with addiction.
- The acoustic guitar Martin D-18E, played by Kurt Cobain during the legendary MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, was sold in 2020 for 6.01 million dollars. This is the highest price ever paid for a guitar.
- Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards often plays a guitar with the low E string removed. This approach significantly influenced the band’s distinctive sound in songs such as Brown Sugar.
- In the city of Houston, a fully functional guitar standing 13 meters tall was built and entered into the Guinness World Records. It featured all the parts of a standard guitar, including strings and a fingerboard.
- Slovak native John Dopyera was the co-founder of the Dobro brand and the inventor of the resonator guitar. His instruments had a major influence on blues, bluegrass, and country music in the United States.

Dowina guitars – guitar making in Slovakia

The journey of Dowina Guitars began in 1979 in Devín, where a violin-making workshop focused on the production of string instruments was first established. Violin-making craftsmanship, precise work with wood, and a deep understanding of acoustics laid the foundation for the later production of acoustic guitars. All of this experience gradually evolved into the development of instruments where the balance between construction, material, and resulting sound plays a decisive role.

Founder Stanislav Petko Marinov devoted himself not only to the craft itself but also to the research of wood properties and acoustics. Over the years, he successfully connected practical experience with theoretical knowledge gained in acoustic laboratories. The core philosophy of the brand became a strong emphasis on high-quality materials – carefully selected resonant soundboards, often sourced from Spain, Italy, or Switzerland, which have a crucial impact on the character of the tone and the overall performance of the instrument.

The family character of the company naturally continues into the next generation. Erika Maťo Marinová has moved production further toward high-end all-solid guitars and significantly expanded the area of individual custom orders. Custom guitars tailored to the specific requirements of musicians have become one of Dowina’s strongest assets. Each instrument is created with respect for the player’s needs – from sound characteristics to visual details.

Research and development also play a key role within the brand. The Dowina team consists of specialists with backgrounds in acoustics, wood processing, music, and engineering, who are constantly searching for new solutions and improvements. The result is innovative construction elements, proprietary technical solutions, and a continuous pushing of the boundaries of what acoustic guitars can offer. At the same time, production remains firmly rooted in traditional craftsmanship, where every detail has its purpose.

Thanks to this approach, Dowina Guitars has gradually built a solid reputation not only in Slovakia but also abroad. Their instruments are used by musicians in various countries and across different musical genres, proving that high-quality, honest musical-instrument manufacturing can successfully originate in Slovak workshops.

That is why, as part of the Made in Slovakia project, we decided to visit their workshop in person and show how these guitars are created.
