ROVA: A Slovak product that has grown beyond borders

The Slovak brand ROVA has relied on honest local production, strategic partnerships, and strong innovations for 25 years. In this interview, they reveal how a local project grew into an ambitious player on the European market, what lies behind their Solar Roof technology, and what their plans are for expansion and further portfolio development.

What do you think about the Made in Slovakia project, and why did you decide to support it?

We consider Made in Slovakia an important initiative that supports local production and the honest work of Slovak people. We believe that local products strengthen our economy, and these values go hand in hand with our own vision.

How did the idea to establish ROVA come about, and what inspired your entry into the roofing systems and ventilation market?

ROVA was originally part of the Swedish Lindab Group, but today the brand is once again in the hands of Slovak owners and continues to build added value for its customers. The strategic partnership with Lindab remains in place in the areas of gutter systems, construction profiles, and a comprehensive portfolio of ventilation products.

Are you planning to expand into new markets?

Yes. This year, we plan to open a branch near Prague in the Czech Republic, and we also intend to enter the Hungarian market, where we are preparing an acquisition. This acquisition will not only allow us to enter the Hungarian market but will also strategically expand our product portfolio with construction systems, structural solutions, and products for the industrial segment. These will perfectly complement our existing range, especially our roofing solutions for the residential market.

What are your future plans regarding innovation and product development?

We want to continue bringing innovation into our business. One of the latest is our Solar Roof—roofing that generates electricity. At the same time, we are expanding the production of ventilation systems with new ventilation products. These are our most immediate plans for the future.

ROVA is the exclusive strategic partner of the Lindab Group in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. How did this cooperation start, and what significance does it have for your company?

In 2000, Black Profil was established as a fully Slovak company focused on sheet metal roofing—exactly what ROVA is known for today. The ROVA brand originally emerged within Black Profil, and over time it became clear that it was easier for everyone to refer to the roofing simply as rova. We therefore expanded the product line under this brand and eventually restructured the entire company.

The idea itself dates to around 1999, when I was looking for a product that could not be sold in hypermarkets or imported from China. This product immediately caught my attention, and I believed in it from the very beginning—also because U. S. Steel was producing the base material locally, which was an excellent foundation for creating a genuinely Slovak product.

This was especially important at a time when large retail chains were entering Slovakia, and many people were importing various goods from China. I had clear criteria for my new company and spent about two years looking for the right product. The whole story has an interesting background—at that time, sheet metal roofing was extremely rare. When I applied for certification at the Research Institute in Košice, Mr. Fraňo, the then director, told me I couldn’t manufacture it because only large companies did so—he meant roofing and trapezoidal sheets. But I simply replied, “Give me the certificate and I’ll take care of the rest.”

And that’s how we started. Step by step, the company grew—and now it has been 25 years. A beautiful anniversary.
